Science: Biology Life Begins with Cells Cells are the basic building blocks life. They are the smallest units of life that are capable of growth and reproduction. Similar kinds of cells grow in groups to make up biological tissues. Various kinds of tissues work together to form organs. Organs combined to form organ systems. And, finally, organ systems work together to form an living creature--one that is, itself, capable for growth and reproduction. So, life as we know it begins with cells; and an understanding of cells--what they are, what they do, and how they work--is essential for the study of modern biology and medicine.
