This week you will be busy learning your way around in biological cells, the basic building-blocks of living things.  Your studies deal mainly with animal cells. There are a number of similarities between the structures and functions of animal cells and plant cells. However, there are a number of critical differences, and you will discover those differences in a later lesson.

Life Begins with Cells

Cells are the basic building blocks life. They are the smallest units of life that are capable of growth and reproduction. Similar kinds of cells grow in groups to make up biological tissues. Various kinds of tissues work together to form organs. Organs combined to form organ systems. And, finally, organ systems work together to form an living creature--one that is, itself, capable for growth and reproduction. So, life as we know it begins with cells; and an  understanding of cells--what they are, what they do, and how they work--is essential for the study of modern biology and medicine.

1. Study the article, Cell Structure

Note the terms and concepts that are new or confusing to you. Discuss these issues with your classmates and use the Google search box to research them on the Web.

2. Study the internal details of animal cells.

  1. Determine the role that each of the following organelles play in the function of cells.
  2. Use a dictionary to find the proper pronunciation for each of the terms.
